Knitting

Beginning Knitting:  Students will learn the basics of knitting—cast on, knit and purl stitch; and bind off.  Shaping, reading stitch patterns and finishing techniques will also be taught.

 

Supplies (all sections):  U. S. size 7 or 8 needles and light colored worsted weight yarn (4 ½ to 5 sts to inch).

Beginner Lace: Let’s get started with some patterns that are fun but not too complicated; learn 3 patterns for a scarf or more! Written instructions and charts will be discussed. Either way we will have plenty of design possibilities. Level: Confident Beginner.

LACE- THE EVELYN CLARK WAY: Her new book is a little gem. It shows us how to knit a spectacular triangular shawl following her directions and allows us to design our own shawls, by choosing different stitch patterns. Level: Intermediate.

The Purl Stitch and Beyond:  The rest of basic knitting and more for those who have been doing only the knit stitch: purling, increases and decreases, reading patterns, choosing yarn and needles, pattern stitches, plus more, as time permits. Whether you hold the yarn in your right hand (American Style) or your left (Continental Style), this class is for you.

Intermediate Knitting: Learn the next steps after Basic Knitting in a nurturing environment.  We introduce students to circular needles, double-pointed needles, shaping (increasing and decreasing) in our “real life” knitting – a simple hat with color work and mittens.

The Secret Language of Knitting Patterns: For intermediate knitters; Learn to translate a pattern into a project, such as a hat, mittens, or a baby sweater. Choose a project for your level with one new technique.

Mosaic Knitting:  This color technique is easy and fun to knit. If you can slip a stitch and knit stripes you can knit these beautiful patterns. In this class students will knit samples and play with color. (Prerequisites: Students must be able to knit and purl while carrying on a conversation.)

Soaring With Socks: Socks knit on 2 circular needles, as Cat Bordhi introduced, go more quickly as well as avoid some of the problems of dpn’s! You can try them on as you knit and assure correct size. Level: some experience with sock knitting essentials.

Afghan Square of the Month Class and Club:   This class will run all year long, meeting monthly.  Using Knitter’s Great American Aran Afghan Book. We’ll cover one or two 12 by 12 squares per month (announced ahead of time), and have fun! Students will learn about the art of cabling, as well as many other techniques (don’t worry – not all at once!) There will be one make up class offered each quarter.  At the end of the year, (or more often if we feel the need) there will be a finishing class where we’ll talk about how to sew squares together and finish an afghan.  Skill level:  Advanced Beginner/ Intermediate.  You must be comfortable with casting on, knitting and purling.

Heel Toe Heel Toe: This is the next step for experienced sock knitters.  Students will learn several different ways of constructing sock heels and toes: Dutch, French, peasant heels, and star toes.

The Joy of Color Theory- A Playful Approach:  A hands-on approach to learning color theory in stranded knitting. Experiment with knitted swatches to see how changing design and placement affects color choices. Through several experiments students will get a feel for color theory with a minimum of rules. Learn to choose colors to achieve your desired effect for any project. Must have stranded 2-color knitting experience.

Knitting in the Round: Learn the tricks of knitting in the round with circular and DPN while making a beanie. Level: confident beginner with basic knitting skills.

Beginning Socks:  Learn to use double point needles and techniques for basic sock design. Student will make a sample sock from cuff to toe. Prerequisite:  Students must know how to cast on, increase and decrease.

Continental Knitting: Come learn the hows and whys of knitting with your left hand in the European or continental manner. This is

not a class for rank beginners, but a class for knitters who want to change their style of knitting or add another skill to their bag of

tricks.  It might also be for folks who knit continental but who have questions about how to do specific techniques with the left-handed approach.

Toe-up Socks:                                          

Have you ever worried if you were going to have enough yarn to finish a sock? If so, this method is for you.  There is no need to knit a gauge swatch. Just choose your yarn and needles and begin knitting from the toe up to the cuff.  Since you get to try on the sock as you are knitting, you will always get a perfect fit. Basic sock skills needed.

Basic Felted Tote Bag:              

This Beautiful and functional bag is made of worsted-weight wool held double on large needles. It knits up quickly.  Embellishments may include a mohair contrast stripe at the top, a

beautiful closure, and (taught in a separate workshop) needle felted accents.  The class is full of helpful techniques: feltable I-cord handles, an I-cord bind-off that you’ll find useful for other project finishes, picking up stitches and of course, an introduction to the felting process.

Knit or Crochet Trim for Fabric: Learn different techniques for attaching knit or crochet trim to fabric and experiment with a variety of fabrics and yarns to see what combinations work well together. In class, we will work with fabric swatches and explore possibilities for spicing up garments.

Turkish Sock Sampler: Learn traditional eastern sock techniques in one small sampler sock. We’ll knit a stranded tufted sock, toe up. Learn to do Bosnian crochet at the cuff and a crochet cast on for an inserted heel. Students should have some experience with stranded knitting.

Introduction to Lace Knitting: Learn the skills and tricks of lace knitting as well as how to read written and charted lace patterns.  You will be introduced to a variety of simple to intermediate patterns stitches. Students must be comfortable casting on, knitting and purling.

New Knitter’s Lace: This class was designed for the ‘new’ knitter and will explore lace knitting, lace patterns and the kinds of increases and decreases used in lace knitting. Learn to knit lace from a written pattern and how to read charts. Patterns for two lace facecloths and a sampler scarf will be included in handouts. Yarns, needles, and how to block will be discussed as well as commercial pattern adaptation to the student’s sizing. Level: confident beginner (know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off).

Crochet

Crochet for Beginners::  This class covers the basics of crochet while working on a small project, such as a washcloth. The students should leave the class being able to cast on and off as well as working pattern stitches. The students will learn how to read written patterns and graphed patterns. Knitters will learn basics and stitches useful as edging techniques for knitting projects.
