ArtFelt- 3D

Learn a new felting technique! Break away from flat felt. Using forms you will create an Artfelt project – both flat and/or 3-D. Instructor supplies: syllabus, some embellishments, ArtFelt paper
Student supplies: needle felting kit (needles and foam mat), roving (plain or painted), straight pins, and embellishment that you have and would like to try. For shaped work such as the Vase an object that will go through the dryer is necessary- a Nerf football was used to shape the sample at the shop.

Fabulous Felted Fingerless Mitts

  • Instructor: Libby Casarez Fee: $55 + tax
  • Mat Fee: $15 + tax
  • Date: Saturday February 7th 1-5pm

Using merino wool and a resist, students will learn how to make a unique pair of fingerless mitts. Designs can be added for extra detail. This is a fun felted project for all levels of experience.

 Kumihimo

  • Instructor: Fran Hahn
  • Fee: $40 + tax
  • Date: Saturday February 7th 1-4 pm

Learn 3 styles of Japanese Kumihimo braiding on the Kumihimo disk: round, flat and spiral to use for belts, trim, or necklaces.

Student Supplies: BeadSmith Kumihimo disks, 8 bobbins, fiber from your stash. Disks and bobbins available/on hold at Village Wools; scissors, yarn or other fibers from your stash; darning needle; note taking materials; if you wish to add beads, bring a Big Eye needle and #8 beads.

Nuno Felted Scarf

We will use merino wool and a dyed piece of silk fabric to make a beautiful felted scarf. Students will have all the directions to understand how silk and wool felt together as well as a clear understanding of each phase wools move through to become felt. This is a fun class on felt, it does require quite a lot of standing and rolling to achieve a completed project.

Temari A Month!

Cathlena will teach the basics of this ancient Chinese and Japanese thread ball. Each month will be a different design. Beautiful geometric designs create these lovely embroidered decorations or ornaments. Make an appointment with Cathlena to get quick and easy instructions for wrapping your ball.

Student Supplies: PLEASE REWIND a 3” Styrofoam ball with 250-300 yard spool of all-purpose sewing thread, 1 spool Gold Rush, ½ oz. each of 3 or more color 5/2 perle cotton multicolor ball headed pins, scissors, and a chenille needle. All supplies except Styrofoam balls and sewing thread (Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics) are available at Village Wools

Coiled Yarn Baskets

Learn to make coiled baskets by wrapping yarn around a core fiber. Coiling is a fun, portable project and provides a good way to use the yarn leftover from previous projects. The kit contains materials for a coaster or a small basket. Great for Holiday gifts!

Instructor supplies: instructions for baskets, jute, yarn, tapestry needle.

Student supplies: optional small balls of bulky or worsted weight yarn (several colors).

Nalbinding 101

Come learn this ancient and versatile technique! Worked on the thumb with an ordinary darning needle, Naalbinding is the precursor to both knitting and crocheting, and can be used to make hats, scarves, mittens or sweaters. The class will cover one of the simplest stitches, the basics of garment construction, and will move on to more complicated techniques as time permits.

From Bat to Hat: Alpaca Felted Hat

Learn the basics of wet felting and create a wet-felted hat using alpaca or other wooly fibers. Leave with a finished hat! We’ll use fiber batts to make a prefelt form and then mold our prefelt onto a hat form. A variety of styles of forms will be available for your use.

Student supplies: Bring an old, clean towel

Simple Needle Felted Animals

  • Instructor: Lucy Ranney
  • Fee: $35 + tax Mat. Fee: $5
  • Section A: Saturday March 28th 9:30-noon
  • Section B: Saturday June 6th 9:30-noon

Learn to make simple animal shapes, such as a penguin, using wool roving and felting needles. This basic core can be used for the start of many other animal forms. We will be adding small wedges for beaks, eyes, etc. We will discuss the different types of wool used in felting

Instructor supplies: roving for small penguin shape like penguin sample in the shop. A variety of books for reference will be shown. Student supplies: Basic Needle felting kit, or equipment that takes the place, (Felting needles size 36 or 38, tackboard/needle felting surface) Current tetanus shot advised- we are working with very sharp needles!
