Knitting Classes

Basic Knitting

Students will learn the basics of knitting: Cast on, knit and purl stitches, and bind off. Shaping, reading stitch patterns and finishing techniques will also be taught.

Student supplies: Light colored worsted weight wool yarn size 8 or 9 shorter, straight wood needles. Circular needles are encouraged for Laurel’s class.

Linen Stitch Technique

Come with some variegated and solid DK or worsted wt. yarns. Learn this beautiful stitch that looks woven, and if there is time, we will discuss applications for the half-linen stitch. Scrap yarns of the same weight are fine for testing out this fun technique.

Learn the basics of the Magical Möbius! The cast on is the tricky part, and the rest can be as simple as just knitting! Student supplies: if you wish to do a scarf, 300 yards of worsted weight yarn such as Silk Garden or Poems, a skein of Malabrigo worsted will work for a heavier weight and 47” or 60” circular needles in size 9-13(2 sizes larger than yarn requires)

Intermediate Knitting

Had a beginning class and want to move forward? Class projects designed to practice simple pattern reading, charts, basic cables, increasing and decreasing. The hat is an introduction to using circular needles, simple color work and double pointed needles. Basic knitting skills are required (knit, purl, cast on).

Student supplies: 16” size circular needles and DON’s US size 7, 1 skein Cotton Fleece; and worsted weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors.

Toe Up Socks

  • Instructor: Maura Stone Fee: $75 + tax

  • Date: Saturday June 20th 10-4pm with a lunch break

You will knit a sample sock from the toe to the cuff. Skills covered: knitting in the round, increases, making a heel flap, making a gusset, directional decreases, different leg and cuff patterns, stretchy bind-off, measuring the foot for the sock- well fitting! Knitting a sock from the toe to the cuff means that you don’t have to have a particular stitch or row gauge, and you can use any yarn from lace weight to bulky. Everything is determined by the size of the foot, and the number of stitches that surround the foot! Must be familiar with traditional sock knitting

Student supplies: 1 skein worsted or dk weight light colored yarn for a sample sock, set of 5 double pointed needles, size 4-5, tapestry needle, stitch markers.

San Miguel Evening Shawl

Sumptuous, undulating waves of gorgeous yarns, designed by you, will propel you through this QUICK to knit shawl on sizes 13 and 15 needles. In no time, you will be wearing this versatile, striking shawl.

Instructor Supplies: The teacher will provide you a six page, detailed, line by line instructional pattern including color photos and a sketch. She will also help you create your own designer yarns! Plus, a little surprise for you later in the class. And, as always, an exciting, colorful trunk show of knitted shawls and garments for your inspiration.

Student supplies: Approx. 530 yds total of a combination of ribbon, glitzy, plain, eyelash, sequin and novelty yarns. To keep things interesting, we will be changing yarns every fourth row and rows will grow shorter and shorter due to these frequent decreases. Sizes 13 and 15 circular needles to accommodate a cast on of 162 sts. I use 24” circular needles; 8 large stitch markers that fit over size 15 needles; “G” or “H” crochet hook for trim; sticky notes; scissors and LOTS of enthusiasm!!!

Möbius Cast On

Into to Stranded (Fair Isle) Knitting- Make a Warm Cowl

Learn how to knit beautiful designs with just 2 colors per row in the traditional stranded knitting technique. We will make a 2 sided (double) cowl, nice and warm for winter. This class covers learning to carry one yarn in each hand, some basic color theory, achieving good tension, and choosing motifs. We will use simple traditional Scandinavian motifs and just two colors throughout.

Instructor supplies: Basic instructions, sample patterns, designs; graph paper, knitted samples, reference books.

Student supplies: bring 2 different sock yarns (fingering weight yarns), one variegated and one solid in contrasting colors, not matching; size 2 or 3 16” circular needles (#3 if you knit tightly, #2 if you knit loosely); Homework before class: Cast-on 140 stitches of variegated yarn knit 3 rounds, being careful not to twist.

Beginning Socks- Cuff Down

Learn to knit a traditional sock from the cuff to the toe. You will finish a sample sock in a child’s size. Techniques covered: stretchy cast-on, joining stitches in the round, ribbing, knitting in the round, making a heel flap, making a gusset, directional decreases, making the right size, fixing errors.
Student Supplies: KP&S #203 Easy Children’s Sock; double pointed needles size 5 or 6 suitable for worsted weight or dk (double knitting) in a light color; stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors.

Beginning Sock Knitting

Learn the basics of planning and knitting socks. You will knit a toddler-sized sock. Knit another and have a pair of socks for a kid. Techniques include cuff-down sock knitting. With the techniques learned in this class, you’ll be ready to scale them to adult-sized socks!

Student supplies: for toddlers sized sock: size 3 or 4 double pointed needles, sport weight or DK yarn in a light color such as Nature Spun sport.

Cast-On, Bind Off

This is a hands-on class to learn several cast-on and bind-off techniques and their best uses. Some of the techniques that will be covered will be stretchy cast-on and bind-off, Norwegian cast-on, provisional cast on (at least 2 of these), cast-on for picot edges and hems, a sewn cast0off a tubular cast-on and a few others.

Baby Bootie Trio

  • Instructor: Judy Baird Fee: $60 + tax for all 3

Knit any one or all! Three different tried and true bootie patterns, perfect for carry along on summer adventures. You can combine any or all sessions. Scaled pricing: 1 class $25, 2 classes $45; all 3 for $60.

Go Wide Go Narrow- the pattern, the increase and decrease

This is a hands-on class to learn increase and decrease techniques and their best uses: how to make them look the same on right and left, how and when to use a ‘make one left’ and ‘make 1 right’, the lifted increase, paired single increases and decreases, double increases and decreases, multiple increases and decreases, multiple increases and decreases, quick increases for gathering, bias knitting and mitered corners.

Beginning Brioche Stitch or a Beautiful Stitch for a Scarf!

Learn the basic brioche stitch with schematics; learn how to fix a mistake, and how to finish your piece.

Student supplies: 2 oz. sport weight yarn and size 10.5 needles to practice on, then choose something special for this lovely pattern.

Fingerless Mitts

  • Instructor Becky Arnold

Fingerless mitts are quick, fun to learn, and make great gifts. We will cover the technique for knitting the mitts, including the thumb gusset, from a basic pattern. Then we will explore ways to customize the pattern for any yarn and any size mitt! We will personalize it with fancy stitch patterns.

Student supplies: DK or Worsted weight yarn (4-5 stitches/inch, 100 grams=3.5 oz., appropriate size needles (DPNs or long circular for Magic Loop), small stitch holder, scissors, tapestry needle.

Continental Knitting

  • Instructor: Maura Stone

This is a hands-on class for knitters who want to expand their skills to include continental knitting (tensioning/holding the yarn in your left hand instead of “throwing it” with your right). This is a good skill to have if you want to knit faster, or want to knit Fair Isle/stranded patterns (two colors used in one row). It is a great skill to amaze your family and friends!
