Shadow Weave Workshop

Explore the only American weave structure. Learn the basics and then step off the path and push it to the max! This is a round robin workshop, so you will have the opportunity to work on several different versions of shadow weave.

Student Supplies: Students will receive a booklet with a material list and drafts (for warps) on February 5, or upon class sign up, and must pre-warp their loom according to one draft of their choosing. Notebook and one hand-painted warp are included in the material fee.

  1. Fixing On Loom Errors

    "Everything is fixable." You have heard Cathlena say this many times. In this demonstration class, she will show you how to recognize errors, how they happened, and how to fix them. With this class and her notes, you will conquer your fear of mistakes.

  2. Rag Rug Workshop

    Here is a wonderful way to use old clothes, towels, sheets or that fabric you can't remember why you bought, and weave beautiful rugs, mats and clothing. We will start class with a pre-warped loom and weave 6 coordinating place mats each with a different technique. We will discuss fabrics, stripping methods etc, for a desired outcome. This is a class for weavers who know how to warp a loom.

  3. Intro to Doubleweave

    Date: Tuesday, Feb. 9; & Thursday, Feb. 11;

    This class is an introduction to the various possibilities on four harnesses: two layers, including slight pattern variations, tubes, slits, and double width. We will work off a single sampler warp, weaving and discussing double weave theory. Students must already know how to dress the loom and weave. Looms must be warped before the first class.



  4. Beginning/Advanced Tapestry Weaving

    Learn basic tapestry techniques or refine those you've already learned while completing a 10 inch tapestry. Topics discussed will include color theory and design principle, as well as reference books and loom referrals. Looms will be warped in class during the first session, and tapestries will be steamed during the studio tour on the last class meeting.

    Student Supplies: 12/6 Swedish cotton warp and 3 skeins of any 3 of the Lamb's Pride Worsted in: Black, red, heather blue, light gray, dark gray, light brown, or dark brown.



  5. Handwoven Transparencies

    Transparencies are woven with an open background and an inlay design pattern. Design, warp and weave this traditional Swedish weaving with a minimum of effort. Special effects can be woven with pattern in the design areas. For weavers from beginners to advanced.

    • Navajo Weaving (Introductory Class)

      Learn warping and weaving on an upright Navajo Loom. Learn the basic techniques of weaving usin contrasting color palettes. Students should complete a 12 inch by 12 inch piece.

  6. Beginning 4-Harness Weaving

    Students will learn the basics of weaving: terminology, how to read and draft patterns, calculate yarn amounts and of course, weave. Special emphasis is placed warping the loom so that you will master the set up. You will begin with 2 samplers and there may be time for a project.

    Student Supplies: warp yarns to be purchased throughout class and for a final project; calculator, measuring tape, scissors.

    Instructor Supplies: Notes which you will use forever! - and weft yarn for samplers.



  7. Pattern Reading & Drafting

    If you've ever wondered what those numbers, lines, boxes, strokes, X's and O's next to those delicious patterns in the Handweaver's Pattern Book or Handwoven mean, this is your class. You will learn how to read pattern drafts, do drawdowns, and invent your own patterns.



  8. Mixed Warp

    Date: Saturday, May 22

    Learn how to pick multiple fibers, textures and colors to make a dramatic warp, which can be woven quickly. Discussion will pertain to picking materials, winding a multiple thread warp, sleying the threads to avoid a stripy look, and patterns that will show off the warp. PREREQUISITE: A good working knowledge of warping front-to-back and weaving is necessary.

    Student Supplies: 8, 10 or 12 dent reed or make arrangements with the shop to borrow a reed to use with rental loom; yarns can be brought, or purchased in class.



  9. Warping Back to Front

    Date: Thursday, June 3; 6-9 pm

    This workshop is for weavers who are frustrated by some of the problems encountered when warping a loom from front to back. This technique is useful if you are working with a very fine and/or delicate, or a very long warp. This is the perfect excuse to dust off that raddle you never knew what to do with. Do not pre-wind the warp. PREREQUISITE: Weaving experience required.

    Student Supplies: Please bring the yarn for a quick project of your choice. DO NOT PREWIND WARP !

  11. Beginning Spinning

    Classes will cover the history of spinning, hand spindles, moving onto the wheels, basics of fiber preparation, spinning and plying. Spinning is a wonderful experience! The first class will address the hand spindle, a very ancient method carried to the present. Then second week you will start the process of spinning on a wheel - you will be assigned a different style of wheel each session. Next you will learn about fleece preparation (skirting, washing, carding, combing). We will also learn body stretching exercises to prevent overuse injuries. Spindles and wheels will go home with students each week. IF YOU HAVE A WHEEL THAT YOU INTEND TO USE DURING CLASS, PLEASE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH LINDA TO VERIFY IT IS IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION, AND APPROPRIATE FOR BEGINNERS.

  12. Spinner's Tune Up

    Come build your spinning confidence with the course designed for advanced beginners. Whether you have taken a beginning class or taught yourself, this workshop will help you build confidence in your skills, build you knowledge of terms and concepts, and learn alternative methods of spinning and plying yarns. Bring your wheel and your questions and come prepared to have fun.

    Student Supplies: Spinning Wheel; Hand carders, niddy noddy, lazy kate; pen and paper, and any equipment you usually need while spinning (oil, etc.)

    Transition from Basic Knitting to pattern reading and color work. class projects include a scarf that allows you to practice simple pattern reading, charts, a little basic cable, increasing and decreasing.     Student Supplies: Recommended yarn for scarf- Lonesome Stone 50/50- approx. 500 yards; or one skein Plymouth Mushishi. Size 7 straight needles for scarf. For hat 2 contrasting colors of Queensland Collection Rustic Tweed, size 5 16-inch circulars and dpns (wood or bamboo)

  16. Knit a Bunny, Bear or Elephant

    Or all three! Great for gifts or to adorn your shelf ! We will use the patterns in Last Minute Knitted Gifts which were written by Ahza Moore and Marion Edmonds. Students should know the basics of knitting, casting on, knit, purl, and binding off. New skills covered in the class will be knitting on two circular needles, specific increases and decreases, and invisible seams. We will stuff the animals as time allows.

    Student Supplies: Light worsted or worsted weight yarn, 150 yds for each animal; two 24 inch circular needles US size 5 or 6 to give gauge 5-6 stitches per inch; small amounts of additional yarn for animals will be discussed in class; Last Minute Knitted Gifts.

  18. Circumnavigated Cardigan Knit-along

    This classic v-neck cardigan by Medrith Glover was featured in an early issue of Knitter's Magazine. The cardigan is knit in one piece... only 3 or 4 ends to work in!!... sew on buttons, and you're done! Use variegated yarns to emphasize the mitered corners. Gauge determines the size of the garment. Techniques include: Provisional Cast On; 3-Needle Bind Off; and Short Rows. The pattern must be purchased for this class (available at Village Wools).

    Student Supplies: Sufficient yarn and appropriate needles for project, pattern, general knitting supplies.

    These designs are Jared Flood. The Porom uses a simple lace rib, but it has ribbing that flows into the design, great shape, and innovative technique. The Koolhaas hatincorporates the “no cable-needle” techniques for twisting stitches. Interweave Knits is reprising this design AGAIN in Accessories issue, currently available at VW. The Porom pattern may be purchased as a pdf download on brooklyntweed.blogspot.com from Jared Flood.   21. Top Down Raglan Sweater

    The students will learn how to work a sweater from the top down on circular needles. The nifty thing about this type of sweater is there minimal finishing work to be done. In class you will knit a sample sweater- and plan a design for a quick child's sweater based on your gauge and size of yarn used.

  22. Two EZ Classic Baby Sweaters

    EZ stands for Elizabeth Zimmermann and these two charmers are among her most famous. The Baby Surprise Jacket is probably the most knitted garment in history. The second sweater is featured in Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac as the February project, hence “the February baby sweater.” It is a good introduction to top down knitting and a simple lace pattern.     • The Bigger Bear Class

      Date: Tuesdays, Feb. 23, Mar. 2, 9 & 16

      You can knit an heirloom teddy bear for yourself or someone you love, and perhaps even get a jump on your holiday gift list for 2010 and years to come. This classic garter stitch bear is knit mostly in one piece on two circular needles.. You will learn to knit“short rows” to create the shaping, as well as some valuable finishing techniques. For intermediate knitters.

      Student Supplies: 250 yards worsted weight knitting yarn (no thick and thin), 2 - US 6, 24" circular needles, stitch markers, tapestry needle, polyfill stuffing (available at craft stores). Pattern will be supplied by the instructor.



  23. Beginning Socks

    Have you ever wondered if you were going to have enough yarn to finish a sock? If so, this is the method for you. There is no need to knit a gauge swatch. Just choose your yarn and needles and begin knitting form the toe up to the cuff. Skills Required: Knowledge of basic sock skills and construction.

    Student Supplies: approximately 425 yards of superwash sock yarn; 2 #2 circular needles- 20 or 24 inches, and an adventurous spirit.



  26. Log Cabin Baby Afghan

    In this class we will knit a lace scarf out of un-dyed yarn, and in the last class, we will dye our scarves to the color of our choice, showing off the beautiful lace pattern. Students must be proficient and comfortable knitting, purling, increasing (including yo's) & decreasing.

    Student Supplies: Needles size 5 to 8, pins for blocking. A material fee of approximately $32 will cover yarn, pattern and dye materials.

    This is a practical shawl that you can tie in the back to leave your hands free to work or knit.

    Come learn this interesting and ancient technique! Naalbinding pre-dates crocheting, knitting and draft spinning, and has been in constant use since the Stone Age. Despite its antediluvian history, Naalbinding is far from primitive; it can be used to make everything from heavy-duty working mittens to lacy cowls and scarves. The class will cover a beginner's stitch and basic garment construction, and will go on to more complicated work as time and interest permits.
